Smykker er i utgangspunktet noe vi bærer som en forskjønning, noe som er vakkert, noe som forsterker vår personlighet. I utstillingen UGLY BEAUTIFUL ⋅ BEAUTIFUL UGLY utforsker kunstnerne forestillingene om det vakre og det stygge gjennom å gjøre materialvalg for hverandre. Oppgaven er å lage noe vakkert av det stygge og noe stygt av det vakre. Responsen på andres materialvalg, og ens egen oppfattelse av dikotomiene vil skape verk som innehar flere kvaliteter. For hva vil det egentlig si at noe er vakkert eller stygt?

Gruppen kaller prosjektet Extranalities og består til denne utstillingen av Herman Hermsen (NL), Tim Carson (GB), Peter Vermandere (BE), Sofie Bjørkman (SE), Denise J. Reytan (GE) og Felieke van der Leest (NO/NL). Gruppen utvides med ett medlem pr. utstilling.

Extranalities nr. 1  Herman Hermsen (NL) Tim Carson (UK) om å samarbeide and they each exchanged 13 images on which they based new jewellery. The works were exhibited  at Gallery Reverso in Lisbon in 2015.

For the Extranalities nr. 2 they invited Peter Vermandere from Antwerp to collaborate.  They sent each other material which they didn’t intend to use themselves, but didn’t want to discard because of its inherent value or meaning. This resulted in an exhibition at Gallery V+V in Vienna in 2016.

For Extranalities nr. 3 they invited Felieke van der Leest (NO) to join them. They again sent each other material accompanied with an assignment on which to work. The result was exhibited at Gallery Multiple in Hasselt, Belgium, in February 2018.

Sofia Bjørkman (SE) was asked to participate in Extranalities nr. 4, but circumstances meant that the exhibition could not take place. 

For Extranalities nr. 5 Denise J. Reytan (DE) joined the group.  This time the group exchanged ugly and beautiful items, with the aim to make an ugly pieces of jewellery from the beautiful items and vice versa.
